Sand casting is one of the oldest and most widely used metal casting processes in the manufacturing industry. Due to its flexibility, cost-effectiveness, and ability to produce both simple and highly complex components, sand casting remains a key production method in modern foundries and is widely applied in automotive, machinery, energy, construction, and general industrial sectors.


As the name suggests, sand casting uses sand as the primary molding material. A sand mold is formed around a pattern that represents the shape of the final casting. Once the mold is prepared, molten metal is poured into the cavity, where it cools and solidifies into the desired form. After solidification, the sand mold is broken away to retrieve the casting, followed by cleaning, finishing, and inspection processes.

The sand used in this process is typically a mixture of silica sand, binders, and additives. This composition allows the mold to maintain sufficient strength at high temperatures while still being permeable, enabling gases to escape during pouring. Different sand systems can be selected depending on the alloy, casting size, and surface finish requirements.


One of the greatest advantages of sand casting is its wide range of applicability. Almost all commonly used casting alloys can be produced using this method, including gray iron, ductile iron, cast steel, stainless steel, aluminum alloys, and copper-based alloys. Sand casting is also suitable for producing parts ranging from small, lightweight components to large and heavy castings weighing several tons.


Another key benefit of sand casting is its relatively low tooling cost. Compared with die casting or permanent mold casting, sand casting requires simpler molds and lower initial investment. This makes it an ideal solution for low- to medium-volume production, prototype development, and customized components. Design changes can also be implemented more easily, providing greater flexibility during product development.

Factors such as sand quality, mold design, gating and riser systems, melting practice, and pouring temperature all play critical roles in determining the final casting quality.
